Zermatt, situated at the foot of the Matterhorn, has an excellent reputation for lovers of off-piste and cross-country skiing. The ski area is not particurlarly well adapted for beginners. For others, the possibilities for skiing are excellent and not at all spoilt by occasional halts in high-altitude restaurants, ranked amongst the most famous in the Alps. However it is a pity that the links between ski areas are not easier (particularly those requiring a link by road), especially when it is such fine ski terrain, so any time spent waiting becomes interminable.
